Really enjoyed this look into Trey Taylor's life from the background to his present days with Devil's Lair. His mystery during the previous Backstage installments left me and many others crying for the man behind the tats and shades. This installment did not disappoint, A. M. Madden you've rocked us again!!

I have a strong love of Jack and Leila Lair. Through them I found a love for Devil’s Lair, Cliffhangers and A.M. I honestly thought the man of few words, behind the dark shades would never do it for me as much as Jack. It is time for me to eat my words. I was blown away by Trey’s story. I was beyond intrigued and emotionally invested while reading. I literally cried through whole chapters, Trey’s story was touching and his history was so heart achingly emotional. It only made Trey and his love story all the more of a 5 star read and an amazing fictional adventure.

I knew Trey had a dark past from reading books 1-3… but I never imagined how dark. I read the first four chapters with a constant stream of tears running down my face. I’m sure there are some of you that don’t enjoy books that will make you cry but for me it makes them more real and makes the good parts that much more rewarding, to see Trey find success, a family (his band and even little Lair), love and to read about him overcoming his demons after everything he had been through was an emotional roller coaster I would gladly ride over and over again.

This excerpt reveals so much; how much Trey is hurting, how low his belief is that his life can be good, how angry he is, and how much he has been though. We see something we never saw in Trey before, the foundation of his rock star image slips right from the beginning, in the prologue. We see that he wishes his “fate” were different.

We see Trey’s life as a teenager, what his home life was like, who he turns into when he sets off from home, and how he finds his way to becoming the cocky, man-whore, guitar playing, rock god.

Through the reading journey of Trey’s life we meet Tara. She is a strong accomplished woman who can keep Trey on his toes but also be there for him in those rare moments he finds himself vulnerable. With Tara in his life we see him transform from the loner behind the glasses to a man hopelessly in love. But let’s be real, he’s still Trey Taylor. He’s still got great one-liners to torture Leila and Hunter with, there are moments and decisions where he returns to his old ways, and you know he’s still got the shades.

My personal goal is to have Madden’s first words be “fing, Hunter.” Leila isn’t happy about my goal.

This novel really is everything “Trey”; it’s heartbreaking yet sarcastically funny. Backstage is book 4 in The Back Up Series and I believe it could be read as a stand-alone but I highly recommend against that. By reading the set you get a better grasp on Trey’s story and you have all the background of Devil’s Liar. I don’t think I would have really grasp how phenomenal Madden’s mind is, how great the story is, and the full respect of the relationship in the story had I not read these books in order. If there are any of you who believe Trey could never measure up to Jack, as I did. Give him the chance, I can almost guarantee you won’t regret it. For those of you who don’t enjoy a book that would make you cry, please please still give it a chance. I’m on board with you, when the sadness comes from something like a main character dying, but this is so different. Reading a book that evokes emotions in you because the story is so brilliantly dark but ends so very good is SO different. It makes the happy ending just that much better.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. The opinions in this book are my own. This series seems to just get better and better. I really enjoyed this book being from Trey's point of view. Madden has written a very solid, powerful, evocotive and emotional series. If this book about Trey's storyline was so good I cannot wait to read the books following this. I do not think I would have ever guessed that there was so much to Trey's background, I made many guesses before reading this book. What I will say is that all my guesses were way off. I recommend that others read this and figure out Trey's background for themselves to see where their guesses line up with the storyline. I will also say that I think I really came to like Trey through his point of view and portrayal in this book. I felt so many things while reading about his experience that had me identifying with Trey and feeling a little of what he has felt. I enjoyed my visit to Trey's world and the world of music as he experiences it. The romance is even sweeter in this book due to the changes in Trey throughout the book. There are some very steamy, raw love scenes in the beginning of the book. As the storyline progresses the romance and love scenes become a bit sweeter but still steamy and spicy as well. I recommend this book for other readers and especially those that like romance.

Trey is the amazingly talented bass player for the band and an enigma to all. His band mates and friends know little about him but know he will stand by thier side always and is one they can count on. He answers very little in the way of questions about himself & nothing of his past. His band mates know him by Trey because that's the name he wants them to know along with the past he gave them. He doesn't do commitment it can only lead to heartache. That is until Tara is assigned to write a series of articles on the band members. The members have freely giving information on themselves all except Trey... Tara is drawn to Trey like no other and knows he feels the connection also but is fighting it but she doesn't know why. She is willing to give him time and wait until he is ready to open-up and let her in.
There is no way you can't fall deeper in love with the character of Trey the more you read and understand his story. The pain,suffering,and heartache Trey has had to deal with at the hands of the ones supposed to give him unconditional love is absolutely heartbreaking.
The story line will grab you hook on and reel you in. I've loved all the characters of Devil's Lair and their loved ones but Trey will hold a special place in my heart for the beautiful and amazing heart and soul he has.. A.M. Madden did a phenomenal job telling Trey's story just as she did with the whole Back-Up Series.... Excellent read 5 stars!!!!
