The Martial Arts Woman Motivational Stories of Human Triumph Andrea Harkins 9781937884185 Books Reviews

It's a fantastic book with wonderful stories. While the title implies it is a book for women in martial arts, the stories and lessons are worthwhile for everyone - regardless of gender and their interest in martial arts.
The Martial Arts Woman is an easy-to-read, feel-good book featuring short stories of women from many walks of life who have chosen to embark on a “martial journey” to self-improvement. In this book, you will learn far more than discipline and defense; you will discover how each used the arts to catapult them to goal achievement, empowerment, self-healing, motivation, to overcome would-be obstacles, and to skyrocket their self-confidence and sense of well-being. Caution! This book may cause you to feel extreme inspiration and admiration for those who have shared their stories.

I just received my signed book, and am thankful and honored that Andrea took the time to sign it for me. As I began to read the book, I thought that I would read one section at a time, but then could not stop reading because every section spoke to me very personally; I have read three sections so far, and the following inspired me....
It begins by addressing MINDSET, where the ninja warrior mindset tells us to engage the ninja prophecy that is deep inside of us. The second section looks at VALIDATION, which tells us that martial arts will help us to never have to seek validation. The third concerns FEMININITY, which is a big thing with me since I am the only woman at our Academy. Andrea says that being a powerful martial artist does not take away from a woman's feminine nature ... in fact, it enhances it! Thank you, Andrea, I cannot wait to read the rest!
Andrea, I got your book today and have read the first 20 pages and I am completely hooked already! One of my very best MA instructors was a women that I will never forget. I have been a martial artist for 35 years, hold 5 Dan Black Belts in TeaKwonDo and Hapkido. I have taught self-defense to women for years...and will be again doing so very soon at a local college that has a 80% female student population. I am very happy I will have a book I can now recommend to female students - especially at a seminar like venue where reading your book may be able to get them more involved than just a self-defense "class/seminar".

This is a much needed book that is very well executed. The martial arts can appear to be a very masculine affair from the outside (and even from within at times). Testosterone, muscles and two guys beating the living daylights out of each other are images that leap to mind for most. The martial arts can be much more than that though. They can be an empowering way of life; for men and women alike.

We take the lessons learnt in the dojo – lessons in resilience, discipline, commitment, strength and adaptability – and apply them to our lives. Life can be as brutal and challenging as any fight.

Gichin Funakoshi – often called “The Father of Modern Karate” – said, "One whose spirit and mental strength have been strengthened by sparring with a never-say-die attitude should find no challenge too great to handle. One who has undergone long years of physical pain and mental agony to learn one punch, one kick, should be able to face any task, no matter how difficult, and carry it through to the end. A person like this can truly be said to have learned karate."

I agree! The contributors to this book have embodied that martial spirit in the tales they share. Their stories and insights also embody a true femininity. A femininity of strength, determination, compassion, insight and power. This is a book written by warrior women and it will inspire all who read it.

As I write this, the love of my life – herself a Martial Arts Woman – is pregnant with our daughter. Our daughter will be educated in the martial arts, because we both want her to be a Martial Arts Woman too. The lessons outlined in this book are exactly the ones we wish to impart to her though the martial arts. It’s a joy to read this coming together of martial values, life lessons, and feminine strength.

A brilliant book!

Iain Abernethy, 6th Dan karate
I am one of the lucky ones-I found a dojo that not only supports women in the martial arts, it actively celebrates them. There are two female masters in my school now and the men respect them to the highest degree. We have all become a family and support each other through life's ups and downs. Andrea's book does the same thing-the inspiring stories show that no matter how "together" you may look,we all have our personal struggles and through the martial arts and the amazing, motivational people that practice it, we are able to persevere and overcome most obstacles.

The story by Sama Bellomo brought me to tears. If someone with her illness can get up to train at the dojo, what's my excuse for not going in with my able body? But rather than leave you feeling guilty, these stories inspire and lift you up and make you realize how beautifully imperfect we all truly are. I highly recommend buying a copy for your daughters and I plan to regift my copy to my dojo so more women can read it and pass on the wisdom. Thanks, Andrea Harkins, for a wonderful book.
