The Silver Codex III Woods Edition Volume 3 Emily Kirby Books

If the first volume acted as a set-up novel and the second acted as a transition novel, the Silver Codex III is where answers about what caused so many things to go wrong in Centerville are finally revealed. In this novel that is more supernatural action/mystery rather than its given genre of horror, Xarissa and her friends explore a haunted woods to find the source of corruption in their area and while doing so discover forgotten history, hidden powers, and a wide variety of allies and enemies.

Forgiveness and how people deal with being wronged continues to be a huge theme in this novel. However, the author also addresses how forgiveness is often hard to give, and cannot be easily given to those who have done horrible things to you. This is most noticeable between Xarissa and her ex-bully from the past novels, but also becomes an important part of the town’s and woods’ history.

The series also continues to have a wide variety of minority characters, though most of the new characters introduced don’t appear to play huge roles in the overall plot at this time. The importance of these characters could change over time as the novel hints at greater things occurring in the Everly Woods and in Centerville than Xarissa and the reader is currently aware of, which I really hope for as some of the introduced minor characters have the potential to be very interesting.

Compared to the new minor characters, the main secondary characters are fleshed out more in this novel since they become more aware of and involved in the events occurring. This is especially true for Xarissa’s best friend Lunette, who is revealed to have her own fears that contrast with her normally strong nature.

Interactions from Xarissa’s sister, Dominique, and Dominique’s boyfriend, Kelton, are contain some of the more touching and humorous moments in the book. This is a great improvement for them, as previously these two characters only happened to be involved in the plot based on their relation to characters that had something supernatural/plot-related happen to them.

The novel does use a good amount of exposition to help reveal past history for the forest and town, but as the main characters often have to fight for or hunt down these pieces of information it never feels like answers are just given to the characters. Additionally, the way the exposition is given often comes hand-in-hand with hints and foreshadowing for the future volumes, so the reader is given a peek at both the past and future when reading over these parts

Grammar errors still exist in the Silver Codex III, though the author continues to be aware of, apologize for, and poke fun at this fact. The errors also usually have a gap between when each instance occurs and never completely take away from the story, so while occasionally jarring they are often forgivable.

What I often had more of an issue with were the human villains, who were incredibly racist and sometimes hard to take seriously as threats to the heroes. Even the protagonists occasionally make fun of the antagonists and the stereotypical mistakes they end up making.

Luckily, these villains are hinted as not being the greater power at work both in this and previous volumes, so this lack of threat may be intentional by the author in preparation for the reveal of greater evil.

This book does mention - though does not go into detail - with a few subjects dealing with LGTQB characters and has some scary/violent scenes, so I would recommend this book for teens or older. Reading the first two books is also strongly recommend as events that have occurred in the previous volumes are mentioned and play a big role in understanding character interactions in this volume.
